ONLINE GLA ACADEMY "School of Excellence" Where Students Believe, Achieve and Succeed |
There have been some concerns on why we made our decision to open the online classes.
Timeline:
Governor Hogan closed down our city on March 16, 2020. We were in shock and waited patiently on our next instructions. The most important thing was to make sure students, staff, and our families were safe.
Governor Hogan said schools may re-open in 4 weeks.
GLA gave workbook packets (April & May) on the website to aid students with assignments and their educational needs. The work packet would also help us complete 3rd Quarter Grades and 3rd Quarter Report Cards.
Governor Hogan said schools may re-open May 15, but instead, he announced schools will not be re-opening.
We apologize to the parents who feel we did not respond quickly enough. Our biggest crisis was living in fear, seeing our loved ones affected by COVID-19, and feeling very helpless. Some of our staff members have already lost a mother, a father, sons, and daughters. Family safety first: If COVID-19 has not affected your family, keep praying and count your blessings. I have an 85 year-old mother-in-law laying in the hospital fighting for her life.
New Normal
We are starting to understand our new normal. The reason we made our classes mandatory is because we are required to report accurate testing and report cards, while figuring out the new normal. This is why things are subject to change.
After meeting with staff, we reviewed concerns on how we should move forward. We realized this is our new normal and how we can survive this crisis. We are still under DURESS..
Parents Concerns…
*Some parents wanted their child to have a summer vacation with no educational needs met.
*Some parents wanted the educational needs met; education is the first priority.
*Some parents are great teachers and their child is doing great.
*Some parents do not want their child to fall behind.
*Some parents think it’s too late for education, or they can’t afford it.
*Some parents are too busy, and some parents don’t care.
GLA Options…
(1st option) GLA’s decision was to re-open the school as soon as the Governor lifted the stay at home order. The plan was to re-open in May, June, July, or August and resume your child’s education. During the summer, increase academics and take a trip once a week for fun.
*But the Virus became more deadly and it started affecting homes in Maryland
(2nd option) GLA re-opens in July or August to get a jump start on your child’s education.
*But 2019/2020 report cards and testing was a factor
(3rd option) GLA Online classes continue the student educational needs. This was the best decision for the children. Many parents contacted us requesting help. A lot of parents were struggling trying to educate their children. We chose to stay safe, educate our students, fulfill their academic needs and have enough data for the 4th quarter Report Cards.
Testing K-6th
If you have successfully home schooled your child requesting a report card and do not want them to attend online classes, you have the opportunity to have your child tested. You can set up an appointment with our secretary. The student will be dropped off at GLA for testing. The price for testing will be on the GLA Website. Assessments and Bench Mark Testing are required to complete our 4th Quarter Report Cards.
Online Cost
The plan to keep your child educated is only a 2-day a week mandatory class. The cost is $30 per day. We would love to do it for free, but the tuition is paid to the teachers and the administrators to help educate your child. The GLA family highly appreciates your understanding.
We are in this together. Let’s work together for our kids and have positivity.
